Review: Korean Hip-Hop Duo Untouchable Keep It Funky On 'Clockwork' Featuring Babylon [VIDEO]

Hip-hop has always had close ties to the world of funk music.

Where would early rap acts have been without the sampled music of James Brown or George Clinton?

Yet, often in today's world of cacophonous, hi-hat-heavy loops heavy on swagger and low on musicality, that connection to the feel good grooves of the 1970s sometimes gets lost.

That's why it's great to hear Korean duo Untouchable continue to blur the lines between funk, R&B and rap with their new single "Clockwork," featuring Babylon.

By reconnecting with such a guitar-driven dance, even disco, vibe the group recalls shades of recent Daft Punk collaborator the guitarist-producer Nile Rogers, responsible for many of the biggest songs of the polyester decade.

It is unfortunately a vibe that increasingly dissipates as the hook in "Clockwork" takes over, but that too is for a worthy purpose. One thing about a successful dance song is it needs to draw as many music fans across genres to the floor. Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" could be the greatest dance song of all-time for that reason. It can call out to anyone.

The hook in "Clockwork," although a bit overproduced for this reviewer's taste, is a clear shout out to K-pop fans everywhere. There are shades of BEAST, EXO even Shinhwa. It's clear that Untouchable wants to reach as many people as they can with their music, just like all those acts I just named.

And though they seem to be at their best when their music is at its funkiest you can't fault them for wanting to connect with the widest possible audience and they do so with the authority of obvious fans of the aforementioned bands.

If they seem a bit overzealous, you can't really hold that against them either. The two members of Untouchable, Kim "Sleepy" Sung Won and Park "The Action" Kyung Wook just returned to the music industry in early summer with the single "Take Out," after completing their mandatory two-year enlistment in the South Korean army.

These guys are clearly ready to go all out and make it to the top at any cost.

And though the lyrics of "Clockwork" might nearly all be about partying, there is an urgency and a commitment to the present moment that makes it seem, at least in that instant, like they just might get there.
