Skechers Sundown Festival 2014 – Music, The Element To Rock The Stage

November 22 was a night of great music and dance at the Skechers Sundown Festival 2014. Featuring Asian music talents from different countries in Asia, the annual event had invited popular and upcoming artistes from South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China to represent their countries and showcase their performances. This year, the organizer Red Spade Entertainment extended their invitations to artistes from Malaysia, India and also Singapore. Enthusiastic audience crowded at the front of the stage, looking forward to the highly anticipated performances of their idols.

As part of the opening act, Singapore's local hip hop rapper, ShiGGa Shay, did his interesting rap by switching between Chinese, English and a local dialect Hokkien. The audience was swaying to the hip hop music while ShiGGa Shay performed three of his rap songs namely "Limpeh", "Lion City Kia" and "Grizzle Grind Anthem".

The next performance was by another Singapore local singer, Jeremy Teng, who used his heartfelt singing to perform a Mandarin song "Miss you so much 好想你" and two Japanese songs "I love you" and "Close your eyes瞳をとじて". The humble Jeremy, who had won several singing competitions while representing Singapore, talked about his appreciation to all the audiences who were present at the event to support musicians like him from all over Asia.

Indonesian girl group Sensation of Stage (S.O.S.), who was the next to showcase their charming dance performance, sang a total of five songs mostly in Bahasa Indonesia. The songs included "Cherry Love", "Tick Tock" and "Drop it Low" from their singles. The six beautiful members showed off their harmonised dance along with their lively songs, to mesmerise the audience. The members expressed their great feelings about Singapore and thanked the organiser for the invitation to this event as a representative for their country.

When Regina Lin came on  stage, she sang two lovely songs "The life I want 我要的生活" and "Travelling with Music 听着音乐去旅行" from her albums and also "Lover情人",  a classic Cantonese composition from the Hong Kong band Beyond. The famous DJ cum singer from China revealed her love for travelling and liking for the delicious food, the architecture as well as the people here in Singapore.

Even before the music started, fans in the audience were already screaming on top of their voices when they saw their favourite boy band getting into position for their performance. Cross Gene, the South Korea representative, heated up the stage as they danced confidently to their recent release "I'm not a boy, not yet a man어려도 남자야". The charming six-member boy band showed off their charisma as they moved their bodies to the music, attracting passionate cheers from the audience.

"Hello, we are Cross Gene from Asia," the members exclaimed followed by their signature hand signs. The audience continued to scream as each member did his self-introduction in English. Yongseok pronounced his name very slowly and waited for the audience to respond. Shin wanted the audience to remember his name and so he spelled it out carefully. Casper kept asking how the audience was feeling and vowed to make the audience go crazy as the music of the second song "Crazy" filled the stage. Their synchronised dance and the upbeat music for the second song energised the whole stage, making the audience crazy as promised.

As the infectious energy overflowed to the next song "On the floor", the members really got the party on the floor levelled up with more screaming from the audience and dancing to the music. With lots of bouncing around, the members just could not stay in the centre of the stage as they found ways to interact and get the audience hyped up. The hot weather just got even hotter as Casper ditched his outer jacket and displayed his toned biceps at the start of the song "Shooting Star". The song progressed from a mellow tune into a lively mood, attracting the audience to dance along with the tempo.

Maintaining the vibrant stage, Cross Gene continued dancing to the music of "Dirty Pop" with the audience singing along to this catchy tune. The boy band really pumped up the stage with more excitement before leaving the audience still in high spirit.

Nothing is more attractive than a musician playing his guitar. James Yang, the special guest from Taiwan, played and sang the unplugged version of the song "Stay" with his acoustic guitar. The handsome musician then sang the remix version of the Chinese song "Forget who I am忘了我是谁", indulging the audience in his sexy husky vocal.

Japanese piano rock band, Weaver, was the next to perform, starting their stage briefly with the Indonesia folk music "Dayang Sampan", more popularly known from the Chinese song "Tian Mi Mi"; and moved on to their two-minute jam session which hyped up the enthusiastic audience. When the music of their next song "Time will find a way" began, Yuji said "We are so happy to see you, so please let us hear your voice!" He then made the audience sing along with them.

Bassist, Shota revealed that it was fourth time they performed in Singapore but it was their first time to play in front of such a big audience in Singapore. They were very excited. "Today we'll show what a piano band is and today we'll show what Weaver is. Maybe most of you don't know about us. But don't worry, we will lead you." Shota encouraged the audience to wave their hands, bang their head and shake their hips while enjoying their music. He added "The way to enjoy Music is completely free, so please enjoy." The audience cheered.

Using their song "Shin Se Gai 新世界" in the mush up, they inserted several songs in between including the melody of Cold play's "Viva La Vida". Weaver went on to make the audience screamed as the three musicians played together on the same keyboard. The scene got even more heart-warming when they played the melody of Singapore's National Day song "Home ", surprising the cheering audience. Cheerful drummer, Toru, even brought out the adorable plush of Olaf when the band was playing "Let it go", the theme song of the animation "Frozen", showing the mischevious side of the band. The witty threesome later joked that Olaf had melted due to the hot weather in Singapore.

Live music ruled the stage as Weaver continued with their last two songs "How to say I love you" and "Freewill", leaving the audience craving for more.

Kanika Kapoor got on stage, in her glamorous red sari, to sing four songs including two Bollywood film songs "Lovely" and "Baby Doll". "Have some fun in Bollywood!" the elegant India representative exclaimed as she engaged the audience to dance along with her, Bollywood style.

Hard rock music blasted the venue as the four-member rock band, Pupil, from the Philippines conquered the stage. The band sang five songs including their native song "Super Proxy" which attracted screams from many fans in the audience. The band then ended their performance with the burning tune of their latest release "Out of Control".

The gorgeous actress, Kate Tsui, interacted with her fans and audience in fluent English, Chinese and Cantonese when she was on stage. She sang the romantic song "Sweet Lover亲密爱人", followed by "Drenched" and "In my song我的歌声里". The chatty Hong Kong representative expressed her honour to be at such an international event, thanking the organiser and sponsor as well as her fans. Kate also revealed her love for the Singapore food such as laksa and chicken rice.  She hoped that the audience would support her newest drama "Smooth Talker" which she had just finished filming. To make the event special, Kate even mixed the Chinese and English version of the song "I love you" and sang it for the first time at the event.

The stage exploded with rock music when it was taken over by the famous Thai rock band Big Ass. Singing mostly in Thai, the Thailand representative performed a total of four songs namely "Tow Tee Mee", "Arb nam ron", "Don tree" and "Dan nae ram mit". The band continuously blasted the entire venue with their rock music, making the audience feel so high throughout their performance.

The stage became more gentle with the mellow performance of Singapore artiste Olivia Ong. The singer started with her lively song "Not your business要你管", followed by a more sentimental tune "Unchanging 不变". The audience was enchanted by Olivia's soothing vocal and the acoustic music which was specially arranged for the event.

The charming artiste continued with the sweet melody of "The pursuit of Happiness 幸福记号" while pretending to play her guitar. Olivia ended her performance with the very romantic tune of "A Love Theme" and "Fairy Tale 童话", while the audience was mesmerised by every moment of her singing.

The next on stage is Malaysia's risen star, Shila Amzah, who stunned the audience with her fluent Mandarin cover "The longest Movie 最长的电影". The witty and humorous singer got everyone excited when she joked about having 20 songs to perform. The multilingual singer also got to sing her own Malay song "Cinta Hati", while covering an English song "All of Me" and a Korean song "Overdose", impressing the audience with her strong and powerful vocal.  Shila then revealed about her first album which would be released next year before singing her last Mandarin song "The night when I think of you 想你的夜 " with the audience joining in the singing.

The renowned singer-songwriter Chang Zheng Yue was next on stage to sing five of his compositions including "Used guitar 破吉他", "Intersection 路口" and "Missing is an illness 思念是一种病". The audience were very excited to sing along with the carefree artiste, especially during the familiar tunes of "First experience of Love 爱的初体验" and "Freedom 自由". The singer also shared about his joy coming to Singapore to enjoy the delicious food and meeting his friends.
