Korean Rapper Bumkey Appears In Court For Involvement In Alleged Drug Scandal

On December 11, Korean media revealed that hip-hop artist Bumkey was allegedly arrested in October and charged with drug distribution.

The allegations surrounding Bumkey (real name Kwon Ki Bum) involve distribution of Ecstacy and a Methamphetamine. The methamphetamine involved in the allegations is Philopon, a drug related to crystal meth whose abuse first became prevalent within Japan.

According to Enews, Bumkey is currently under investigation by the Seoul Eastern District Court, under the suspicion that he violated drug laws by selling and taking illegal substances. His case was first entered with Seoul Eastern District Court on October 23 and the first trial took place on November 11. On December 11, the first hearing occurred along with an explanation of the trial process.

The alleged charges were outlined through a report provided by SBS News which was translated into English by the media outlet Soompi. “Bumkey is being charged for selling approximately six grams of Philopon and ten Ecstasy pills to two of his acquaintances as well as taking Ecstasy on two different occasions from the period of August 2012 to September 2013,” explained the report as translated by Soompi. 

Bumkey has denied the allegations of distribution and drug use. He will face a subsequent hearing through a civil trial on December 11.

His agency, Brand New Music, issued a statement following the release of news surrounding his drug allegations.

Brand New Music took a neutral stance by stating, “We think unfortunately about the fact that our company's artist, Bumkey, is being involved in a drug-related issue, and we would like to sincerely apologize to the fans.”

The agency went to state that Bumkey continued to deny the allegations. "Bumkey is saying all the charges and related issues are groundless, and Brand New Music will reveal everything clearly through the judicial process.”
