The Golden Age of K-Pop 'Everything about Global Marketing'

Recently, overseas appearances by K-Pop stars have become a norm.

These days, at least one team from each entertainment agency specializes in international promotional activities, also referred to as "global marketing." Entertainment agencies create idol groups and train them for global marketing even before their official debut. Only a select few are able to carry on their plans of going overseas.

Reporters from the news source "OhmyStar" met with members of diverse global marketing teams to find out everything about global marketing.

Lee Yeon Soo, a 27-year-old global marketing team member from Cube Entertainment, revealed that he studied psychology in Canada before he opened her eyes to the entertainment industry. Lee Yeon Soo, who has always enjoyed music, is now managing international appearances of idol group B2ST and singer G.Na.

Park Dae Won, who is in charge of global marketing of 4Minute and BtoB, stated that he interned with CJ and VIACOM while he was still in college. Park Dae Won studied marketing psychology in college and became involved with Cube Entertainment after receiving a recommendation.

Reporter: I'll begin with the simplest question. What is the job description of the members in the global marketing team?

Answer: "Basically everything that has anything to with overseas. We have to come up with the name of the group, inspect the introduction in the English version of the album, and everything else from the smallest things to dealing with contracts regarding an artist's international appearances, as well as inspecting any songs that have been created by an international writer/producer. We also respond to international fans and notify people of future events. For international tours, we travel with them from the beginning until the end."

Reporter: So basically, the two of you are in charge of everything that doesn't involve Korean. What is a positive aspect of global marketing in your opinion?

Answer: "Overseas, we are the faces of Cube Entertainment. The press part as well as the management part so we have to know how to do everything. We are able to do a lot of things that special branches are not able to do."

Reporter: There must be occasions where you are misunderstood by a lot of people since you are constantly working with the stars. How did people around you react?

Answer: "My friends tell me how awesome it seems and ask me if I always talk and play with celebrities. But honestly, our job isn't always as good as it seems. Sometimes we even have to pick up trash that is left by fans. At first, I used to question myself why I had to do those things."

Reporter: When did you feel that your job was worthwhile?

Answer: "When I meet a lot of people in the industry. Recently, we met with the director of YouTube's global marketing. Although I was a lot younger than the director, we were able to communicate since I was the main representative of Cube Entertainment. I enjoy the part where I can meet people without any barriers" (Park Dae Won).

Answer: "I feel proud when a project becomes completed. Honestly, we work harder to clear up any vagueness about our job description. It is a job that constantly requires trial and error in order to find the right way" (Lee Yeon Soo).

Page 2: The First Time Meeting with the Artist?

Reporter: When you first entered the company, was it hard to adapt to the organizational culture? Were there any cultural shocks?

Answer: "It's very obvious that Korean working environment exercises less freedom compared to international corporations, not to mention the crucial characteristic of Korean corporations: order of rank. We were warned of a lot of things so there weren't anything like a cultural shock since our agency is pretty laid back" (Lee Yeon Soo).

Reporter: We're very curious about your first meeting with the artists.

Answer: "They were basically just like the people in their age groups. They weren't even acting like divas" (Lee Yeon Soo).

Answer: "I learned about each artist though a book that was written by the representative of Cube Entertainment. I learned the names of the 4 Minute members while being scolded because I couldn't remember them. They really feel like kids. Cute little siblings? However, they are very different on stage. I can feel their star qualities when they go up on stage. It's like they lead double lives" (Park Dae Won).

Page 3: Why is K-Pop so Appealing?

Reporter: You guys are a team created to spread awareness of K-Pop. What do you guys think the secret behind the popularity of K-Pop?

Answer: "At first, I thought the K-Pop boom was exaggerated by the Korean media but when I was working at a school in Canada, non-Asian students asked about K-pop and told me that they love Korean artists. It was amazing. There really must be a boom if kids from a tiny city even know about K-Pop. I think a lot of people fell in love with the unique choreography, style and visuals of K-Pop that is very different form American pop. Fans of K-Pop are usually fans of K-Pop itself and rarely fans of specific artists."

Page 4: If You Want to be Chosen as the Next Global Marketing Manager, Do This!

Reporter: There are a lot of people interested in the marketing field these days. What do they need to have in order to be hired as a global marketing team member in an entertainment agency?

Answer: "The most important thing is language. And you have to have interest in the industry, not in the celebrities. Meeting people and building relationships with them are the biggest parts of this job so you must have great social skills.

Reporter: What would you say to those who are preparing to enter the global marketing field?

Answer: "A lot of study abroad students who are unsure about what they want to do come into this field but I don't think that is a smart thing to do. If you are not interested in this industry, it is not right to come into it. I think it is very important to have a goal that you want to achieve" (Lee Yeon Soo).

Answer: "English is very important of course, but it's only the first step in getting into a corporation. You have to know and understand the culture in order to succeed" (Park Dae Won).

Reporter: Lastly, could you briefly tell us of your future plans?

Answer: "Singers have the ability to present memories to people and have the power to influence the lives of those who listen to the artists' music. My goal is to create an artist that could be everyone's memory" (Lee Yeon Soo).

Answer: "I was to establish 4 Minute as a brand in the agency. I want them to receive much more attention. I will make sure to show people exactly how talented this group is" (Park Dae Won).
