MBC Rules BTOB's 'Drink' Unsuitable For Broadcast

One of South Korea’s major broadcast networks has banned a BTOB song because it supposedly promotes binge drinking. However, the only thing mentioned in the song is not alcohol but water.

MBC, one of Korea’s main networks, has deemed one of BTOB’s holiday songs ineligible to appear on air. BTOB’s song “Drink” is a song about partying and drinking, but does not explicitly include lyrics about drinking alcohol. Even though drinking alcohol is not explicitly expressed, The K-Pop Herald reports that MBC has decided that the song promotes binge drinking.

“Drink” is one of BTOB’s holiday songs from the group’s year end album, “The Winter Tale.”

Some of the lyrics that came into question include: “Drink, drink a glass of water, and then drink again.” The Korean words for "water" and "alcohol" rhyme, and often "water" appears in songs that were originally meant to be about alcohol.

Cube Entertainment, BTOB’s agency, has no plans to change the lyrics of the song and is waiting on the decision about whether “Drink” is suitable for broadcast on other Korean broadcasters, SBS and KBS.

South Korean press is only considered “Partly Free” according to Freedom of the Press 2014 report, as news and culture are often subject to government oversight.

K-pop songs are regularly banned from public broadcast for promoting partying, drugs, and a variety of other topics. Psy’s “Gentleman” was banned for Psy kicking a “no parking” cone, deemed public property; Crayon Pop’s “Uh-ee” was banned for the inclusion of Japanese language.

BTOB released “The Winter’s Tale” music video on December 21, along with the group’s latest mini-album. The group last made a comeback in September, with the EP “Move.”
