Michael Sam Says He Is Not The Only Gay Man In The NFL: Former St. Louis Rams Defensive End Tells Oprah 'There's A Lot Of Us Out There' [PHOTO]

This past Saturday, former St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam appeared on an Oprah Winfrey network documentary and said that he is not the only homosexual man in the NFL.

According to Yahoo, Sam expressed surprise that no other players had come out as gay after his own announcement, stating, "There's a lot of us out there... I'm not the only one. I'm just the only one who's open."

Sam had announced his sexuality this past February before the NFL draft, and was picked up the St. Louis Rams in a late round. He was later cut from the Rams in August, and was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys only to be cut in October.

He has since dismissed the idea that his sexuality cost him a spot in the NFL, stating, "I don't like to think that way... But I do believe I'm a very talented football player and I'm going to continue working hard and try to get that opportunity to play in the league."

He continued, "I did everything I was supposed to do. I did everything right... I am proud of how I handled things."

During the Oprah documentary, Sam revealed that waiting to hear whether he would be drafted was "the longest three days of my life. The New York Jets telephoned his agents to say they weren't interested, and the Cowboys texted to say they were out, too."

According to The Guardian, it was Sam's boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, who supported him most during the wait to get picked, and helped to affirm Sam's decision last February to reveal his sexual orientation to the nation. Sam stated, "In that moment, I was like 'I don't care what happens. I made the right choice to come out,'" conveying his steadfast nature.

Sam is currently a free agent, but he still has a very positive attitude. An hour after he was cut from the Rams, he tweeted, "The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I've always known. The journey continues."
