AirAsia Flight QZ8501 Update: Compensation Offered To Plane Crash Victims’ Families, Black Box Still Untraced

The latest AirAsia Flight QZ8501 updates reveal that the budget carrier had offered initial compensation for the family members of the passengers. Wall Street Journal reports that at least 300 million rupiah ($25,600) is being offered for each passenger.

David Thejakusuma, whose seven family members were on the flight, provided the amount. According to the publication, the letter of compensation was dated January 2. The said amount is only the initial amount which is "party of the overall." The letter reportedly came from AirAsia Indonesia Chief Executive Sunu Widyatmoto.

Meanwhile, latest AirAsia Flight QZ8501 updates reveal that the crucial black box is still unlocated. Search teams are continuously working to recover objects from the plane crash although bad weather recently prevented the divers from going deep.

"Divers were ready on the ship but the challenges were currents and waves," said Fransiskus Bambang Soeltisyo, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, during a conference in Jakarta.

The black box is still undetected for it was possibly buried in the seabed. "They haven't found anything, maybe because the water is turbid and there is zero visibility," Soeltisyo said. "There's a possibility it is buried in mud."

Officials believe that the aircraft's tail and fuselage parts have been recovered although further investigation is yet to be conducted.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash took place on December 28 approximately 40 minutes after its take-off. The flight is from Surabaya to Singapore. There were 162 passengers on board. Less than a third of the victims have been recovered so far.
