Five-Member Girl Group EXID’s Summer Single ‘Up & Down’ Tops 4 Gaon Music Charts Following Viral Video Craze

South Korean girl group EXID’s summer single “Up & Down” topped four different Gaon pop charts this week.

On Thursday, Gaon revealed that for the second week of January, EXID won the digital comprehensive chart, download chart, streaming chart and social chart, making it a quadruple win for the group.

“Up & Down” was released in August of 2014 but unexpectedly topped the charts five months later after EXID posted a video of a concert they played at a South Korean military training camp to their official Facebook page, back in October.

The video went viral, even getting replayed on several state-run television networks,

"I heard from my friends that our group's videos or photos often appeared on social networking sites," EXID band member Hani told the Korean news publication Osen back in December.

"I didn't even imagine it would lead us to high places on music charts."

Hani's bandmate Junghwa is optimistic about what EXID's newfound fame will mean for the group.

"Since we haven't been popular, many people consider us to be rookies," she said.

"However, at least we made a big name for ourselves for now. And it is [now] more important to focus on our activities in the future."
