SPIN, "How Did PSY's 'Gangnam Style' Become the No. 1 Rap Song in the Country?"

SPIN, a well-known music website reviewing concerts, albums, and events, recently posted an article analyzing how various songs make it to the big Billboard charts. With all of the various songs used, Psy's "Gangnam Style" was one of them.

Even though Psy's viral hit has placed #1 on Billboard's Rap charts for the third week in a row, the article by Brandon Soderberg criticizes Billboard's methods on pushing songs to no. 1. "Billboard's clueless new chart methodology is to blame," Soderberg says.

What makes a song #1 anyways? Through their genre? These are some of the topics Soderberg touches upon.

"Despite receiving little to no airplay on rap and R&B radio, PSY's witty K-Pop behemoth "Gangnam Style," currently sits at No. 1 on Billboard's Rap Songs chart for the third week in a row. Blame Billboard's "new methodology" for determining what tops their genre charts, introduced earlier this month. The changes now consider digital download sales and data based on streaming music. The reason for doing this is to move away from genre charts, which are "fueled solely by radio airplay." This is a wise decision that, ideally, would better reflect how people consume music in 2012.
