Yoon Mi Rae Updates Fans On Sony Lawsuit Progress

Yoon Mirae's agency has released an updated statement regarding the unauthorized use of the singer's song in Sony's "The Interview."

Shortly after the film The Interview was released, reports surfaced that Yoon Mirae had plans to sue Sony for using her song, "Pay Day." Sony initially claimed that it had received the rights to use the song, but new information alleges that Sony has since confirmed that it used the song without express permission.

The song appeared without formal permission in the widely controversial film, a comedy film that features James Franco and Seth Rogan as Americans sent to kill North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

In an update on January 16, Yoon Mirae's agency, Feel Ghood Music, explained the situation. "When we contacted Sony about using 'Pay Day," without permission in The Interview, we were initially told that there was a signed contract. That is not true, so we decided to take legal action on December 26 of last year.

"Approximately two weeks later, Sony responded by saying that the contract originally mentioned did not exist, confirming that Sony's explanation was a lie. We cannot understand this and we want official and legal measures taken against Sony's unlawful act. We will also be taking legal action."

The Interview made international headlines due to its controversial material, and an alleged hacking by North Korea of Sony's computer network. Sony's confidential information was released publicly, including employee emails, plots and scripts of upcoming films, bank account numbers, phone numbers and addresses of celebrities, and much more sensitive material.

The movie's release was initially cancelled, but Sony released the film in a limited theater release and made it available online for people to watch. Shortly after the release, reports began to circulate of the unauthorized use of Yoon Mirae's song.

"Pay Day" was released in 2007, on Yoon Mirae's "T3 - Yoon Mi Rae" album.
