Ryan Murphy Thanks Jessica Lange On Twitter After 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Season 4 Finale: Season 5 Cast Will Go On Without Lead?

"American Horror Story: Freak Show" just aired its season 4 finale, and it appears a farewell might be in order for Jessica Lange despite earlier hints to the contrary.

During the "American Horror Story" finale, Jessica Lange's "Freak Show" character Elsa had her final performance. After the episode aired on Wednesday, Murphy took to Twitter to thank the actress.

No doubt due to its tone, many fans took this tweet to mean that Lange would be leaving at the conclusion of season 4 as planned.

"Does this mean she said no to returning or are you thanking her for coming back," asked Brat on Twitter.

Earlier in November, Jessica Lange said, "You know, I told [Murphy] that we would sit down and have a long conversation when this was over."

"In a way this character is so great, I don't know how you top Elsa Mars. I really-in deference to Ryan, who I love dearly and who I respect beyond-I have no idea at this point."

For viewers who may have been dissatisfied with "American Horror Story: Coven" or "Freak Show," FX Networks CEO John Landgraf promises a "very different" season 5.

During the recent Television Criticis Association winter press tour, Landgraf said, "I know what it is, but I can't [say]. I have to let [series boss] Ryan [Murphy] do his thing on that. But it's very different."

"One of the things I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast. I think there's going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to, say, between Book 3 [Coven] and 4 [Freak Show]."
