Babymetal Tour Brings Japanese Pop/Metal Trio To Ohio In May 2015, Girl Group Attracts Mainly Male Audience [PHOTO]

Babymetal fans of North America, guess what? The Japanese pop/metal trio will be playing at Ohio's Crew Stadium in Columbus in May 2015 as part of "Rock on the Range 2015."

According to Metal Sucks, the band toured in 2014 with Lady Gaga, but performed mostly in western states including California, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. Ohio will definitely be a change of scene. After playing in Ohio, they are set to return to Chiba, Japan where they will play at the Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall.

For those who may not know much about the band's background, NPR reports that it was created as a product of Japanese pop idol stable Sakura Gakuin and longtime metal fan Key "Kobametal" Kobayashi. Their concerts are known to incorporate fantasy, escapism, theatrics, volume, and an almost manic cuteness.

Kobayashi explained the idea behind Babymetal, stating, "As a longtime metal fan, I always used to say 'That's not real metal so I'm not listening to it!' I'm a metal purist too, to be honest. But I realized that the scene isn't really getting any bigger. All the old-school metal bands are still around and there's still a fanbase, but it's all getting smaller...

So to bring Japanese metal around the world, it has to be something different and original. It's like sushi! Sushi came from Japan and people had never eaten it before, and now everyone eats sushi all over the world."

It's certain that Babymetal now has a lot of fans - the voices of 17-year-old Suzuka "Su-metal" Nakamoto and 15-year-olds Yui "Yuimetal" Mizuno and Moa "Moametal" Kikuchi have gained a large and particularly male following. Jeff Benjamin of Fuse attended a 2014 Babymetal concert, where he noticed, "The show is roughly 70 to 80 percent guys who love pop music (i.e. cute girl groups)... The end of every song is met with the kind of husky hurrah you hear at a football game-a big difference from the screaming teens Western pop fans might be used to filling arenas."
