This past Thursday, Disney announced that its newest princess will be Princess Elena of Avalor, who is inspired by "diverse Latin cultures and folklore." BBC reports Princess Elena will make her debut in a 2016 episode of the Disney Junior's animated show "Sofia the First" before getting her own spin-off series.

Aimee Carrero of ABC Family's "Young & Hungry" will voice the role of the 16-year-old princess, who is portrayed as the "bold, caring, funny, and clever ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor."

While the show is centered on a teenage character, it will target a viewing age ranging from two to seven years old. Disney has stated that the series will focus on communicating "positive messages and life lessons" for young children about things like "leadership, resilience, diversity, compassion and the importance of family and family traditions."

According to CNN, "Sofia the First" faced harsh criticism in 2012 after a producer announced that the title character was Latina. Disney has since amended that statement by adding that "all our characters come from fantasy lands that may reflect elements of various cultures and ethnicities but none are meant to specifically represent those real world cultures."

Nancy Kanter - the executive vice president and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide - made a recent announcement about Disney's newest princess. She stated, "What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale."

USA Today reports that the series will be presented in 25 languages on Disney Junior channels and on Disney Channels, among other platforms, in 154 countries around the world.
