Top Gun 2 Movie News Update: Tom Cruise will be putting back on his wings, but he might not have a place to land. Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance are working to bring a Top Gun sequel to the big screen, but the decommissioned supercarrier Ranger, which had a large role in Top Gun, may be headed to the scrapyard

Navy Times reported that a Southern California group is trying to convince the Navy to spare the famous ship. According to a press release form Naval Sea System Comman, the supercarrier Ranger, which was featured on screen in "Top Gun," cameo, was sold to International Shipbreaking late last year. There was an earlier attempt to turn the ship into a museum from the USS Ranger Foundation, but it was rejected by the Navy.

Top Gun Super Carrier took on the carrier's cause in September 2014. Top Gun Super Carrier of Long Beach Inc. took to social media and launched an online petition to save the Ranger in early January.

"If you think about what we can bring to it, an economic boon to the city of Long Beach, it's a no-brainer," project manager and hospital architect Mike Shanahan told Navy Times in an interview.

Ranger was in service for over 35 years. The ship completed 22 Western Pacific deployments. During the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, the ship earne 13 battle stars. It was decommissioned in July 1993. It was taken off the list for potential reactivation list by the Navy in 2004. It was designated for preservation.

"Unfortunately, we are not able to keep ships in storage forever, and so we had no choice but to move forward with this contract [to scrap the ship]," Naval Sea Systems Command spokesman Chris Johnson said.

The latest reports say Paramount and Skydance found a writer for the Top Gun sequel. In the 1986 original Tom Cruise played Navy flyer Maverick.

Superstar Tom Cruise also expressed his excitement over the project and if they stumble some blocks, that would be fun to do.

Bruckheimer explained that the movie had been planned for almost 30 years and he believed that they are getting closer and closer to production. He is persistent over the fact that this film had to be developed the soonest.
