2012 Japan and the K-Pop Phenomenon

Some people are worrying that after NHK banned Korean artists from appearing on one of their big concerts, which is considered to be one of the biggest musical festivals in Japan, K-Pop is going to be faced with cold shoulders everywhere.

However, despite the worries in Korea, the streets of Harajuku in September were still filled with K-Pop merchandise. One clothing store was playing 2NE1's "I Love You" and in the middle of Shibuya, was a trailer that announced 2AM's new upcoming album.

Unlike the worries in Korea, Japanese companies were still using Korean idols for their marketing. Many products that used Jang Keun Suk or KARA were at the front of the stores and the photos of 2NE1, INFINITE, 2AM and Girls' Generation decorated billboards and buildings everywhere.

At Tower Records in Shibuya, the 'K-POP LOVERS' campaign was still going on. The CDs from Super Junior, CNBLUE, T-ARA, FTISLAND and many other Korean records adorned the front of the store. There were even records by many Korean newbies who are not yet famous in Korea. It was clear that their passion had not died down just yet.

It was a similar sight to the previous year, where people were still flocking to buy Korean records and this year, there are probably more people who are looking at their records and the magazines.

Shin-Okubo, which is a very Korean culture-centric neighborhood, and Harajuku were all filled with Korean paraphernalia, mostly revolving around K-Pop idols like TVXQ, KARA and Girls Generation. It seemed that the Super Junior merchandise was probably the most popular at the moment.
