Who Would Make The Best K-Pop Halftime Show?

This week, the Western entertainment world is gabbing about a Super Bowl halftime performance from Katy Perry that included dancing sharks, melancholy beach balls, and a fiery star shooting the Perry herself across the stadium.

The pure wackiness and go big or go home attitude of the whole show had a bit of a K-pop feel to it, and also made us start fantasizing about a big time sporting event halftime show that could feature a K-pop act. (Hey, 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony committee and FIFA Women's World Cup planners, the ball's in your court!) A K-pop fan can dream about one of these headliners:

2NE1

This superstar group with tons of hits and crossover appeal is an obvious choice. With catchy dance hits and some intense lighting and backdrops, these women are sure to get a crowd of sports fans even more rowdy.

Super Junior

Put all 12 or 13 of these guys out there at halftime and the audience already has a team full of K-pop idols. Even if these dudes weren't great dancers and performers, Super Junior would be a smart pick for a halftime show based purely on the wide variety in their repertoire. They can bounce between electronic, rap, and pop, making sure there's something for everyone in the audience.

EXO

It seems almost criminal not to include one of K-pop's hottest groups when talking about potential halftime superstars. Given their universal appeal (i.e., their lyrics in Mandarin, Korean, English, and Spanish), these guys would be the perfect group to invite to an international sporting event like the World Cup or the Olympics.

Girls Generation

This is another group where the sheer number of talented performers would be great for a stadium stage -- audience members wouldn't know where to look, which keeps them hoping the show won't end. Plus, we can see the women going colorful and out-of-the-box with some sport-themed outfits and special effects.

Holograms

Holograms of K-pop idols on stages worldwide seem to be all the rage lately. Sure, it's not the same as seeing them in person, but what better way to gather every idol there is into a powerhouse hologram concert at a live sporting event? It'd be a cool way to showcase Korea's use of the innovative technology and add an otherworldly, festive aura to the event.
