Sam Smith Beats Iggy Azalea, Bastille For Best New Artist Grammy Award 2015

Sam Smith was nominated for six Grammy Awards this year so he was going to be tough competition in any of the categories. Sam Smith beat Iggy Azalea and Bastille for the coveted Grammy Award 2015 for best new artist.

Sam Smith was up against some formidable opponents: Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Haim, and Brandy Clark were all vying for the best new artist Grammy Award 2015.

Spotify predicted that Sam Smith would win this category, after compiling global data on the top streamed and shared songs, albums and artists. Spotify came to the conclusion that Smith would take the Grammy category thanks to the success of his hit songs "Stay With Me" and "I'm Not the Only One."

"He had an incredible breakthrough year last year with a fantastic album and a number of songs that Spotify listeners absolutely adored," said Shanon Cook, Spotify's trends expert.

But Cook also gave credit to Bastille: "They had a massive song last year called 'Pompeii.' It started out as a big hit in the U.K. and it crossed over the Atlantic to the U.S."

Iggy Azalea was nominated in four other categories, including the Grammy Award for record of the year category (for "Fancy"), as was Smith for "Stay With Me (Darkchild Version)." Just shake it off, girl!
