The Era of the 'Audition Kid': Busker Busker, Seo In Guk, Lee Hi

It's no news that audition programs have a huge impact on the Korean music industry. It's been 4 years since Super Star K first aired and though many complain of its overuse, they still score amazing ratings. It was never a guarantee that these singers would be able to make it in the industry but starting with 2012, many of them are gaining incredible amounts of popularity, and the critics of the audition programs are being proven wrong.

1. Busker Busker

Busker Busker was probably the most important in beginning this new 'audition kid' era. Huh Gak was nothing compared to the amount of force with which this band debuted. They came out with a fresh genre to the Korean audience of folk rock and pop rock. However, their entire new album is among the top songs on music charts and they're still going strong.

They maintained all of their songs to be on the ranked charts and many believed that only Big Bang would be able to do something like this. Busker Busker, without the help from big management companies or television appearances, was able to do this themselves. They changed the flow of the industry and shocked many insiders, including YG's Yang Hyun Seok.

2. Seo In GukV

Seo In Guk was the first to come out of the Super Star K series and was perhaps the least popular of all the winners.

However, he really found his niche in acting and after appearing in "Respond 1997," he is now one of the most popular actors out there. It's ironic that his newfound fame is in acting rather than singing but it's easy to say that his new popularity will probably translate into his future albums or songs. His duet with Jung Eunji, 'All for You' has remained in the top charts for a while.

Seo In Guk proved that even audition kids could span outwards and become all-around entertainers. He also showed how to keep going even when you think that your popularity has all but disappeared.

3. Lee Hi

She is the classic example of just how explosive the combination of an audition kid with a big management company can be. She has set the record for the longest-lasting artist on the #1 spot in 2012. Many say that there are no other female solos who have as much influence as she does.

Of course YG was big in her success. They recognized her potential and gave her an outfit that clearly fit her the best. They made her into the breakout singer of the year.

Despite the fact that she didn't come out of Super Star K, "K-POP STAR" was the vehicle for her and this made the two programs the two competing audition programs.

People are wondering where audition kids will go from here. Musicians like John Park or Jang Jae In have also debuted and they have a much clearer musical voice than others. Many are curious as to how these audition kids will continue to change music.
