After a slow start, and a long arduous wait for the casting announcement. True Detective season 2 has begun filming in California. Producers have called it the 'lesser known venues of California,' which means the creepy parts.  Colin Farell will play Ray Velcro, a crooked cop beholden to a mobster. Vince Vaugh will play a carreer criminal Frank Semyon, who is in danger of loosing his criminal empire when his move to legitimacy is upset by the murder of the season.

McAdams plays Ani Bezzerides, a detective with uncompromising ethics. Taylor Kitsch stars as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorycle cop accused of something scandalous.

Den of Geek released the following plot synopsis and list of secondary characters, "The recurring cast this year will be Michael Irby as Elvis; Leven Rambin as Sophia; Abigail Spencer as Alicia; Lolita Davidovich as Nancy Simpson; James Frain as Jeff Hunt; Riley Smith as Steve Mercier; Adria Arjona as Emily; Michael Hyatt as Katherine Davis; Yara Martinez as Andrea; Christian Campbell as Richard Brune; Jon Lindstrom as Glenn Ellinger; Emily Rios as Gabby Behenna; Ronnie Gene Blevins; Timothy V. Murphy as Osip Agranov; C.S. Lee as Richard Geldof; Chris Kerson as Nails; Rick Springfield and Ashley Hinshaw will play as-yet-unnamed characters."

"The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought. Caspar's 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur-satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult."

Variety sat down with Vince Vaughn who talked about the new season, "[Creator] Nic Pizzolatto is such a great writer, and so much of this is driven by his stories," Vaughn says. "I thought Woody and Matthew did an exceptional job with the first season. This one's very different, though. It's a totally different story, with its own characters. The thing that's consistent is the richness of the characters and the quality of the material."

The season's new setting has a lot to do with the difference in tone, according to Vaughn. "That was Louisiana. This is a California-based story, and it was kind of birthed from here. A lot of it is set in Los Angeles."

"I really like my character. Nic is so great about investigating characters and their complexities in an authentic and engaging way," he tells Playboy. "I want to watch this show not because I'm in it but as a fan of the material."

"It's nice now to be mixing it up and doing something different with 'True Detective,'" but he isn't ready to write off the movie industry just yet. "I wouldn't say [TV is] more interesting; it's just different. A film like 'The Way Way Back' with Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell was as smart as anything you'd see in any format," he says, while conceding, "TV is definitely having its moment. It's almost as if we've discovered how exciting it can be to tell a story over a longer time frame. In the 1990s we went through a run of independent films that captured the attention of critics and a certain type of audience member. Those movies were edgy, offbeat and risky and had fully drawn adult characters. You can't do that as easily anymore on a big studio movie. If you can't turn something into a franchise that gets people into seats that first weekend, you're probably not going to get your movie made... You also have all these new avenues of financing and distribution, which have the studios running a little scared. Netflix, Amazon, other streaming outlets - they appear to have more patience to finance character-based stories. And not just dramas. I think Netflix in particular has been a fantastic place for documentaries to land and be seen. But the basics are still the same: You want a great story; you need good characters, good actors and someone in charge who's running it well. I think it's the most exciting time since probably the early 1970s for actors, writers and directors in terms of doing meaningful, intelligent, grown-up work, and that has a lot to do with these episodic shows."

There have also been rumors about involvement of the Yellow King. Palazzo has teased this by sendig press kits with references to the allegory. If you remember that is who they were looking for in season one, but it turned out to be more of an allegory. Hopefully it turns out to be some kind of Kaiser Sosey type of super criminal, but that would be a few seasons down.
