K-Pop Soloists Dominate Early 2015, More On The Horizon

The cold brings the solo artists out.

2015 is slowly turning into the year of the solo artist, with the first two months of the year ushering in a wave of K-pop idols holding solo releases. The trend of idol group members promoting as solo artists isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, based on how many singers keep joining the lineup.

January

On January 12, SHINee’s Jonghyun debuted as a solo artist with the release of his album “Base.” The title song, "Déjà-Boo,” did well on Korean music shows, awarding the singer eight awards by the end of the month.

CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa released his solo debut album, “One Fine Day,” on Jan. 20, along with several music videos for “One Fine Day” and a collaboration with Taiwanese singer JJ Lin, “Checkmate.” The singer won four awards on Korean weekly music shows.

The next group member to debut as a solo artist was After School and Orange Caramel member Lizzy. The singer debuted as a trot singer, with the song “I’m Not An Easy Girl.” Her song gained much attention for the music video, which featured scenes from the 1961 film, “Seong Chunhyang.”

January ended with a “Dangerous” solo debut by MR.MR’s Tey.

February

Zico of Block B became the first idol group member to release a solo song in February, by releasing his second solo single, “Well Done” on the 13.

Three days later, Feb. 16, was big for K-pop idols going solo, with two popular idol group members debuting as solo artists. Teen Top’s Niel debuted as a solo artist with a mini album, “oNIELy. He released a music video for his title song, “Lovekiller.”

The same day, f(x)’s Amber released her debut solo mini album, “Beautiful.” She released music videos for “Beautiful,” and a celebrity-filled video for the title track, “Shake That Brass.”

Upcoming Solos

While no other solo releases by idol group members have been announced for the rest of February, March will usher in the third solo album of JYJ’s Xia Junsu on March 3. He will be collaborating with several artists, including Epik High's Tablo.

2NE1’s leader CL is also in the midst of preparations to debut as a solo artist in the United States, but has yet to announce a release date.
