K-Pop Throwback: Reignite The Fire Of The 2012 Girls' Generation-TTS Track 'Checkmate' [AUDIO]

If you are a Girls' Generation-TTS fan who has never made it to the end of the group's 2012 seven-song debut EP "Twinkle" (or even if you aren't), you would be well advised to investigate the album's highly underrated final track, "Checkmate."

From the hot opening drumbeat to the final strains of the song's invigorating chorus, "Checkmate" is a party starter. Once this song gets started, there's really no stopping it.

As a spinoff of the groundbreaking nine-member K-pop girl group Girls' Generation, or a "sub-unit" as it is known in Korean entertainment, Girls' Generation-TTS is known for their daring approach to dance music, working with a dizzying array of producers and songwriters in their brief, three-year existence.

In the process, the group, comprised of Girls' Generation members Seohyun, Taeyeon and Tiffany, has explored the musical idioms of Western hip-hop, Jamaican reggae, 1920s swing, American country and bluegrass, South American dance music and marching band drumlines, just to name a few.

Though with Hitchhiker, the DJ and multi-instrumentalist responsible for writing and producing "Checkmate," the trio may have found the perfect match.

On "Checkmate," Hitchhiker jumps through musical idioms with ease, even throwing in an unheard-of extended live drum solo in the middle of the song's hip-hop-infused main groove. All three of the DJ-producer's contributions to "Twinkle," the songs "Good-bye Hello" and "Library," the latter of which he co-wrote with Jo Yoon Kyung, Sharon Vaughn and Didrik and Sebastian Thott, are the unsung highlights of "Twinkle."

Hitchhiker, who played bass and programmed drums for the rock group Roller Coaster under the name Jinu with Lee Hyori's future husband Lee Sang Soon before the group's 2005 breakup, was in no way involved with Girls' Generation-TTS's follow-up EP "Holler," released back in September.

Though "Holler" was a solid offering for the group, with the title track being a highpoint of the their brief career, when it comes time to record their next album, it would be a wise move for Girls' Generation-TTS to let Hitchhiker come along for the journey.
