Lupita Nyong'o Oscars Red Carpet Dress Stolen From Hotel Room, $150,000 Pearl Studded Gown Lost Forever? [PHOTO]

Lupita Nyong'o is now the victim of a crime meant for the police to handle - but definitely not the fashion police. According to the Huffington Post, Nyong'o's custom-made Calvin Klein dress she wore on the red carpet to this past Sunday's Academy Awards was stolen from her hotel room.

TMZ was the first to report the theft, which occurred at The London West Hollywood on Tuesday. The dress was estimated to be worth $150,000, as it was encrusted with 6,000 white Akoya pearls in five varying sizes. It made quite the splash, and landed Nyong'o on many different best-dressed lists. LA Times fashion critic Booth Moore gushed, "How can you not be impressed by the workmanship on this pearl-palooza?"

According to Yahoo, Nyong'o actually helped to create her dress. She said on the red carpet, "It was so much fun to create this dress. We talked about it being fluid and liquid. I wanted it to be an homage to the sea." She continued, "I've only been wearing it for a few minutes... At the end of the night, we'll see how many [pearls] I've kept on. But they're sewn on quite tightly."

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said of the crime, "We are looking at every scenario; when the cleaners go to clean the rooms they do it with the door open so that's a possibility. Currently we are still investigating; detectives are interviewing and looking for witnesses." The hotel's representatives also commented, "This is a terribly unfortunate situation and we are working with law enforcement on their investigation."

Despite the unfortunate theft of her dress, Nyong'o is sure to keep plowing ahead in both the fashion and cinematic world. Some of her best red carpet looks can be viewed here, and let's not forget last year's Oscar win for her role in the film "12 Years a Slave." She stated, "Being part of such a powerful film as '12 Years a Slave' and looking at the history of black representation in cinema, I know we've come a very long way. There's always room for more. There's always room for growth. I'm just excited and inspired to make more films."
