TVXQ, Girls' Generation Dominate Japan's Golden Disc Awards [RECAP]

Two of SM Entertainment's most popular acts - TVXQ and Girls' Generation -- bagged the bulk of top awards in the 29th Japan Golden Disc Awards held on March 2.

TVXQ, known as Tohoshinki in Japan, proved again to be the darling of K-Pop groups among Japanese fans, winning five awards in total, the most of any group this year.

The duo won "Best Asian Artist," "Best Album of the Year" for Tree, "Best MV" for "TVXQ Live Tour 2014~Tree~" and two of the three awards in "Best 3 Album" for Tree and With, reports allkpop.

Girls' Generation, known as Shoujo Jidai in Japan, also remained a fan favorite as the group bagged the third award in "Best 3 Album" for The Best and "Song of the Year by Download" for "Indestructible".

Among the younger groups, A Pink and VIXX stood out and nabbed two of the three awards in the "Best 3 New Artists" category.

The Japan Golden Disc Awards are an annual awards show hosted by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. The winners are decided after factoring in sales data recorded for the whole year of 2014.

Given this basis for awards, it is no surprise that TVXQ again emerged not just the top Korean but as the top Asian act in Japan. TVXQ has built up a fervent fan base in Japan, packing concerts and tours with several tens of thousands - sometimes even more than a hundred thousand - of attendees per event. The duo's albums have also sold fast and climbed to the top of Japanese charts.

Particularly for 2014, TVXQ's seventh Japanese album Tree debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums Chart and sold 225,000 copies on its first week alone. Similarly, their tour studio album With also shot up to number one on the Oricon and sold 233,000 in the first week release.
