Wheaton College Students Showcase 20 Years Of K-Pop With Dance Performance Video

It's hard not to smile - and for older K-Pop fans, feel nostalgic - when watching this performance video by students from Wheaton College that runs through 20 years of K-Pop dance.

What was meant to be a casual show for the students to celebrate their Korean heritage managed to display, in its small endearing way, the diverse dance styles that have been choreographed for the genre since 1994.

The students began their dance performance with the fist-pumping beats of KGM's "Wrongful Meeting" released in 1994 and H.O.T's "Candy" that swept like a craze in 1996.

Then fast forward to the late 2000's when a wave of girl group cutesy dances like Wonder Girls' "Tell Me" and more seductive moves like Brown Eyed Girls' "Abracadabra" captivated fans.

The latter of half of the video focused on more recent popular dance hits like Big Bang's "Fantastic Baby" and EXO's "Growl" but they also chose to include songs with quirkier movements like Orange Caramel's "Catallena".

In the video, the students describe K-Pop as "a genre that dominated the Korean music market for the past 20 years, incorporating elements of western pop, hip hop and R&B" and this mish-mash influence of K-Pop was made apparent as the group danced through the decades.

Viewers had a few criticisms of the performance like the group ignoring the latter half of the 1990's to the early 2000's, but as a member explained in a YouTube reply, that "this was just a small school performance and not a K-Pop tribute."

Fittingly, the students ended their performance with Akdong Musician's "200%", smiling and the lyrics echoing what fans must feel when watching their idols bop to their songs: "It must be L-O-V-E."
