Review: Fiestar Dance Through The Pain On 'You're Pitiful' From Their 1st-Ever EP 'Black Label' [VIDEO]

Is it possible for a song to be somber, heartfelt and danceable? Five-member K-pop girl group Fiestar believes the answer is yes.

On "You're Pitiful," the new single from the group's first album "Black Label," released on Tuesday, Fiestar prove that a song doesn't need to be all sunshine and rainbows to propel you to the dance floor.

All it needs is a good beat.

And "You're Pitiful" definitely delivers on the rhythmic front. The snare drum crack and bass drum boom make it clear from the song's opening bars that this is not a ballad.

But although the lyrics in the song translate to more of a tell off than a mournful reflection, there is a distinct undercurrent of melancholy in "You're Pitiful." The acoustic guitar adds folk overtones while eighth notes played with a gloriously 1980s synth sound propel the song forward.

Similar to Lily Allen's seminal 2006 track "Smile" from her own debut album, "You're Pitiful" is a tell-off song you can dance to.

Though the heartfelt vocals are a large part of what drives "You're Pitiful" beyond just being another pop song with a snappy rhythm track, the rapping and even spoken word bits (a low point for many K-pop girl groups), are this single's high point.

Though all five members off Fiestar clearly have what it takes to be superstars, the group has yet to make it to the top of the K-pop pyramid. After initially snagging several best new artist awards following their 2012 debut, Fiestar cooled off, with no other song after the band's debut single "Vista" cracking the top 10.

This could have been due, at least in part, to the lack of a Fiestar album release.

With the release of "Black Label," maybe Fiestar will regain some of the heat that surrounded their debut. There's no doubt this group certainly has the talent to make it back to the top.
