Does EXO's 'Exodus' Mark A New Beginning? 2015 Comeback Mimics Group's 2012 Debut

A re-debut for EXO?

EXO, SM Entertainment's ten-member male idol group, will release its second full-length album "Exodus" on March 30. With it, the group will make its first 2015 comeback after a dramatic 2014, filled with lineup changes and several scandals revolving members' personal lives.

"Exodus" is set up to be EXO's new beginning, with its promotional cycle mimicking EXO's debut in 2012.

In 2012, EXO released pre-debut music videos for "History" and "What Is Love," along with a variety of individual and group teaser images that set up EXO's twelve original members as aliens from an exoplanet, all of whom have their own individual supernatural abilities. Only after over twenty teaser videos and two music videos did EXO debut, then known as two separate groups EXO-K and EXO-M, with "MAMA."

The 2015 comeback with "Exodus" is also being similarly promoted pre-album.

Rather than releasing pre-debut music videos, this time around SM Entertainment announced that EXO would perform several new songs at the group's March EXO'luXion concert series in Seoul. EXO's performances of previously unreleased songs, such as "Call Me Baby" and "Eldorado," were captured on fan's cameras at the concerts, and widely distributed around the Internet.

Along with the pre-release music being made public, EXO's 2015 comeback teasers also are similar to EXO's pre-debut teasers.

The artistic take on supernatural capabilities returned in EXO's latest set of teasers, also mimicking the original individual teasers with one member's solo "Pathcode" teaser being released each day. The first teaser video of both series belonged to EXO's member Kai.

The teaser videos for Tao and Chanyeol have also been released.

The group suffered a dark period in 2014, when members Kris (Wu Yi Fan) and Luhan exited the group. The 2015 comeback will be the group's first ten-member comeback. Despite the setbacks, EXO was one of South Korea's most popular idol groups.
