Eat Like A K-Pop Star: The Instant Noodle Edition

Welcome to this week's 'Eat Like a K-pop Star.' It's the weekly series where we showcase a delicious Korean specialty or something we've seen a K-pop star chowing down on lately and show you how to get or create some food of your own.

You can't talk Korean food without talking about instant noodles. The good 'ol cup of noodles has many global iterations, of course, but Korea takes instant ramyeun to a whole new level. It's not the healthiest meal (there's a boatload of sodium packed into one cup), but it is the country's most popular and as much ingrained in South Korean cuisine as kimchi.

The cups are for sale at every corner store individually, although many Koreans buy these babies in bulk (and pack them in bulk if they travel internationally). It's the go-to snack for kids home alone after school, businesspeople who work long hours at their desks and don't have time to go out and catch a bite, hungover students, and, well...everyone. South Koreans rank number one per capita in instant noodles consumer per year, according to the World Instant Noodles Assocation (yes, there is such a thing).

Several K-pop stars including T-ARA, ZE:A's Hyung Sik, and Ryu Soon Young have advertised for some of the country's most popular brands.

It's also apparently a favorite back at f(x)'s Amber's place:

Making instant noodles couldn't be any easier. Just boil some water, pour it into the cup, let it sit a few minutes, and there you have it. Instant noodles.

If you're feeling more ambitious, any noodle cup's flavor and nutritional value is immediately increased by tossing in a poached egg, some kimchi, fresh green onions, or steamed vegetables like shitake mushrooms or bok choy. But all of these are pretty satisfying on their own, too.

Curious about the best and most beloved brands? The universal favorite is Shin Ramyun. The company's red and black packaging is almost as patriotic as the Korean flag and is emblazoned across items like socks and t-shirts. Its red broth is super spicy, making it a morning favorite for partiers who had a little too much to drink the night before and are trying to sweat out the toxins. A taste-testing tour of Korea's instant noodles is not complete without trying this one.

Mu-pama Ramen is another favorite. It's not quite as spicy as Shin Ramyun, but still packs a punch and has thick, satisfying noodles and a robust ingredient packet.

Instant noodle fans that want a white broth flock to Paldo's KoKoMen Spicy Chicken Flavor. This still has some good spice to it, but the lighter broth is a chicken base as opposed to beef, pepper, scallion, and mushroom, so it's a bit more of a savory, milky taste.

Masitneun Ramen is a relative newcomer to the scene, and is popular among people who want a lighter, more mild instant noodle option that has more than just broth and noodles. It feels slightly healthier to eat, but Shin Ramyun fans might feel the need to add a little extra heat.

Need an instant noodle that's going to make you feel like more of a man? No problem, get some Namja Ramne which translates literally to...Man Ramen. It feels a little like the Coke Zero of the Coke family, but it's actually very good and has a more sophisticated, powerful broth flavor than others on the market.

What are your favorites, or the ones you want to try? Let us know in the comments!
