K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Clazziquai Project Celebrate 10 Years Since Their Debut Album On The 2014 Single 'Call Me Back' [VIDEO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a weekly review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

The single "Call Me Back," released in September by South Korean electropop trio Clazziquai Project, celebrates not only the 10th anniversary of the group's first album, "Instant Pig," but also the best attributes of these three inventive musicians.

Clazziquai have pushed musical boundaries since members DJ Clazziquai, Horan and Alex started playing together back in 2001. The group has always worked with various artists across a range of genres, as well as mixing and creating unique arrangements, each one different from the last.

But when it came to making the song "Call Me Back," from the latest Clazziquai Project album "Blink," the group didn't seem to push themselves as hard to make something totally new, instead focusing on showing off the individual talents of each band member.

The beats on "Call Me Back" are kept simple with a playful and funky tempo. This allows Alex and Horan to let their smooth, jazzy vocals shine.

The song starts off with Alex singing the intro. His vocals are probably the most distinctive in all of the Korean music I've come across so far. It has a bit of grit to it and isn't as smooth as many of the newer artists out here. It's a voice which has worked for more electronic tracks such as "Flea," but also but also for ballads and love songs such as this.

Soon after the intro we are also given a short rap segment featuring popular hip-hop duo Baechigi. At first this bit seemed out of place, but after a few listens it added to the quirky musical feel of "Call Me Back."

Horan eventually joins in during the second half of the song, singing the chorus (up until now she had been playing the keyboard and lending the occasional backup vocal). Her voice is a little bit in the higher range, but still compliments Alex perfectly, when he comes with a harmony part.

"Call Me Back" has everything a Clazziquai fan would love about this group, a DJ with a brilliant approach to songs ranging from EDM to ballads and a male and female vocalist, each of whom continue to bring out the warmth of any song they sing.

When these three get together, they don't have to do much to create a standout number.
