‘Empire’ Season 2 Spoilers: Showrunner Talks ‘Heartbreaking’ Rift Between Cookie And Jamal, Will It Last?

From the start of "Empire," there was one relationship that viewers could always trust and count on: Cookie and Jamal. Both were fighting against the odds to have their voices heard and both understood each other at a deeper level, something that Lucious could never quite tap into. So fans were shocked when Cookie and Jamal ended up on opposing sides by the end of the "Empire" season 1 finale. Showrunner Ilene Chaiken opens up about the "heartbreaking" rift between the mother and son and teases some "Empire" season 2 spoilers: will their division last?

"It was very tough for us - heartbreaking, even. And that was our intention," Chaiken told TVLine.com about Cookie and Jamal's unexpected friction.

"But I still believe in that relationship... and I would like to think that the underpinnings of that relationship, which is the most profound and tender one in the show, will somehow lead to something of a rapprochement between them," she continued.

Though Chaiken didn't quite say that they would patch things up right away in "Empire" season 2, she did suggest a little spoiler: nothing can come between Cookie and Jamal, not even Empire.

As we previously reported and according to TVGuide.com, "Empire" creator Lee Daniels has asked his friend Oprah Winfrey to guest star on "Empire" season 2. But according to the publication, Oprah isn't ready to commit.

"I tell him: 'Lee, it's not enough that you've taken every viewer possible on Wednesday night,'" Winfrey said. "'Now you want me to leave my own network?'"

Daniels replied, "I'm wearing her down!"

There's still hope yet!

So when can we expect the second season of the popular show to return? Fox is still the fourth-place network (down nearly 25 percent this season, even with "Empire's" help), explaining why FOX Broadcasting's David Madden "wouldn't be surprised" to see the series come back before mid-season.

And we might be able to expect a longer season 2: Strong said he's OK with an increased order (though it won't be a full 22 episodes), but Daniels doesn't agree. He said he'd even fight an increase.

"Bring it on," he told the Hollywood Reporter
