With all the rumors and speculations about a "Half Life 3" release date coming, Valve head Gabe Newell discusses the possible future of the much-anticipated game.

In a report by Kotaku, Valve is experimenting with the game to run on virtual reality, which was revealed at the recently held Game Developers Conference.

According to the source, although Valve used characters and ideas from "Half Life," this still doesn't confirm that the game will be given a release date.

It was confirmed by Valve programmer Jeep Barnett that they only used the tools seen in "Half Life" to test their VR.

"We've said, 'Let's take some existing art and see how it fits,'" Barnett told Kotaku. "So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher-all those different fun things-and see how they play in VR. But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do."

Talking about a potential "Half Life 3" release date, the programmer didn't confirm or deny any news about it.

"We're not saying, 'no,'" he said. "We don't know what the right thing is [yet]. Our most precious resource is time, and we don't have enough time for people to do everything. Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely. But we don't have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR."

Meanwhile, in an IGN report, Newell hinted the possibility of a "Half Life 3" release date in a podcast called Game Slice.

"The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]," Newell said. "But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we've learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice."

"So we'll keep moving forward. But that doesn't necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean."
