EXO Becomes 1st K-Pop Act To Hold Solo Concert At Tokyo Dome Without Japanese Album Release

Up to 210,000 fans will be able to see SM Entertainment's boy band EXO perform in Japan at the end of 2015.

The K-pop idol group joins several other Korean acts to perform at Japan's Tokyo Dome, one of the most prestigious concert venues in Asia. EXO will hold three shows in November at the Tokyo Dome, and another three shows in Osaka at the Kyocera Dome, reports the K-Pop Herald.

The 10-member idol group becomes the first Korean act to perform at the Tokyo Dome without releasing any Japanese-language songs or albums, in accordance with EXO's global popularity.

The first Korean idol to perform at the Tokyo Dome was solo singer Rain in 2007, following the release of his Japanese album in 2006.

All previous Korean idol acts to perform at the Tokyo Dome spent considerable time promoting Japanese songs in Japan prior to holding a solo concert at the venue in order to build up a Japanese fanbase.

Some critics accused SM Entertainment of replacing TVXQ with EXO despite the later group not promoting in Japan as was necessary for groups in the past. Yunho, one of TVXQ's two members, will be enlisting in the Korean army in 2015, leading to a dearth in SM Entertainment's Japanese promotions, where TVXQ is widely popular.

Although popular throughout the world, EXO has focused promotions on the Korean and Chinese markets, with subunits devoted to promoting in both countries. Every album produced by the group is released in both Korean and Mandarin, but the group gained popularity in Japan despite not releasing Japanese music.

EXO follows in the footsteps of SM Entertainment's senior acts TVXQ, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, and SHINee. Other Korean idol groups, Kara and 2PM, have also performed at the Tokyo Dome.

The seating capacity of the Tokyo Dome ranges from 55,000-71,000 depending on the set up, which has yet to be announced.

"Yunho said at TVXQ's last Japanese tour concert there won't be anymore TVXQ tours for the time being with his upcoming enlistment," translated Netizenbuzz from an Instiz blog post. "A financial analyst said that TVXQ bring in the most income in SM (one tour roughly brings in $100 million USD). Without TVXQ, SM loses out on $100 million in income a year. Because they need a group to fill in for the missing money, they're shipping EXO off to Japan."

According to Instiz, Korean fans of other acts that performed at the Tokyo Dome were frustrated with the seemingly easy path SM Entertainment set up for EXO in order to profit after TVXQ goes on hiatus while the members serve in the military.

"Other artists had to take one step at a time to finally get to stand on that stage of dreams," wrote on commenter. "It's a Tokyo Dome that means so much more to fans... of course others will be uncomfortable with a group that has no such story on their climb to the Tokyo Dome."

However, commentors on Netizenbuzz thought of the situation differently.

"Is like saying I should wash my clothes on the river because my grandparents didn't have a washer machine," wrote Ren's Cookie. "Things are easier and faster now, [that] is not a bad thing."
