Dating Generation: With Only 2 Members Not Publicly Dating, Girls' Generation Shirk Off Girlish Image

The Girls' are growing up, and South Korea doesn't seem to mind.

Despite being one of the most popular Korean acts, fans have overall greeted the relationships of Girls' Generation's members as a sign of the group's maturity.

Rather than Girls' Generation no longer being South Korea's darling, the lack of negative response from fans reflects the shift towards humanizing the idol group.

2014 began with the news that two members of Korean idol group Girls' Generation were in serious relationships and by the end of the year, two other members confirmed relationships with celebrities while the news of another member's relationship was revealed to the public. The news that Girls' Generation member Yuri and baseball player Oh Seung Hwan are dating leaves only two members of one of Korea's top girl groups without confirmed relationships.

Only members Sunny and Seohyun have not revealed relationships to the public.

2013 ended with the news that that YoonA and singer-actor-variety show star Lee Seung Gi were dating, while only days later at it was revealed that Sooyoung and actor Jung Kyung Ho were in a relationship. In April 2014, Tiffany and 2PM's Nichkhun confirmed their relationship, and Hyoyeon made the news for a domestic violence issue relating to her ex-boyfriend. In June of the same year, Taeyeon and EXO's Baekhyun were reported to be in a relationship.

Of all five relationships that came to light in 2015 only the last faced serious disapproval from fans, in part due to several Instagram posts by the pair and EXO's popularity. However, the acceptance by fans of Girls' Generation's relationships as a whole shows how both the group and its fans have matured over the years.

With the news that Yuri is dating, also received without much fanfare from potentially upset fans, only two members of South Korea's eternal girl group were revealed not to be in public relationships.

Debuting with "Into The New World" in 2007 with a girlish concept Girls' Generation has come a long way, with hit after hit beginning with 2009's most iconic Korean song, "Gee." Bright, pop-filled songs were Girls' Generation's route to success.

However, with the group's youngest member Seohyun born in 1991 and Yeri, the youngest of SM Entertainment's latest group Red Velvet, born in 1999, realistically SM Entertainment and Girls' Generation need to shed the image of the group being a simple girl group. Instead, the news, confirmed by SM Entertainment and the members themselves, and the reaction of their fans reveal that Girls' Generation is no longer just another idol group- fans no longer need to keep the innocent image active in order to support Girls' Generation.

Girls' Generation no longer relies on being a popular girl group but instead their widespread popularity is based on what they have achieved over the years, creating hit after hit and becoming one of the most globally recognized K-pop acts.
