'Downton Abbey' Ending After Season 6 With A Movie? Will Maggie Smith Die As Dowager Countess In The Series Finale?

With "Downton Abbey" ending after season 6, rumors and spoilers have surfaced regarding the fate of the beloved characters.

As noted by TVLine, the actors' contracts expire at the end of season 6, and "they want outta there." This is particularly evident (and understandable) for Maggie Smith, portraying the aging Dowager Countess.

"I certainly can't keep going," said Smith to Sunday Times. "To my knowledge, [Violet] must be 110 by now. We're into the late 1920s."

With one more season that will reportedly take place around 1925, fans are curious if "Downton Abbey" season 6 will end with death of the Countess.

"I think the series should end with Violet's death," wrote Adrienne Gilbreath on TVLine. "She is the heart and soul of the Crawley clan, and I can't imagine Downton without her."

But despite "Downton Abbey" allegedly ending after season 6, rumors are brewing that a movie could come after to wrap up the series.

"We would be very interested in that," said executive producer Gareth Neame to EW. "[A movie is] definitely something we're contemplating, it would be great fun to do."

But before that occurs, Neame promises a great "Downton Abbey" season 6. Whether that will be the true ending to the Crawley family remains to be seen.

"Millions of people around the world have followed the journey of the Crawley family and those who serve them for the last five years," said Neame.

"Inevitably there comes a time when all shows should end and 'Downton' is no exception. We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans. We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."
