Review: B1A4's Sister Act Oh My Girl Slice Up The Beat And Shoot For The Stars On Their Debut Single 'Cupid' [VIDEO]

There was a time not too long ago, when if you were going to listen to the latest K-pop release, rhythmically speaking at least, you knew what to expect.

Yet, with the influx of experimental producers integrating dubstep, hip-hop, '80s electro, funk, blues and jazz beats (among numerous other styles) added to the original mixture of Korean trot and Western techno in recent years, there seems to be an increasingly cacophonous list of acceptable rhythms on the table in South Korean pop production.

Swinging wildly for the fences, with a beat that defies categorization, the eight-member South Korean outfit being billed as the "sister act" of veteran K-pop boy band B1A4 is daring right out of the gate on their debut single "Cupid," released on Monday.

Producer Hyuk Shin, best known for producing the Justin Bieber hit "One Less Lonely Girl" back in 2009 as one half of the production team A-Rex, shows that he isn't afraid to mix it up, as he pierces rhythmic convention with a behind-the-beat eighth note triplet snare roll that dominates the mix on "Cupid."

For a group to debut with such a daring sound is a clear testament to how hungry Hallyu fans are for bands willing to bend and even break the typical pop conventions that have driven the pop music markets around the world.

There is no detectable Auto-Tune on "Cupid," just solid performances from SeungHee, HyoJung, JinE, Mimi, YooA, Jiho, Binnie and Arin, eight names you should certainly store for future reference, and daring and satisfying production choices from Hyuk.

If Oh My Girl continues pushing the envelope in this way, they are undoubtedly a band to keep track of.
