'Deadpool' Cast, Trailer, Release Date: Movie Will Share Connections With 'X-Men' Universe

Twentieth Century Fox is giving "the merc with the mouth" his own solo film with 2016's "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds who reprises the lead character.

Reynolds' co-stars include Morena Baccarin (Homeland) as Vanessa Carlysle a.k.a. Copycat, Gina Carano (Haywire) as Angel Dust, T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley) as Weasel, Ed Skrein (game of Thrones) as Ajax, and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

Plans for a "Deadpool" movie came shortly after the character was introduced in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." The studio decided not to push through with the film due to a copy of its script getting leaked online, and "Wolverine" failing to perform at the box office. The project was shelved until it was greenlit this year.

According "Deadpool" creator Rob Liefield, Reynolds desire in portraying the character played a big part in pushing the project forward. Furthermore, it was Tim Miller's test footage that undoubtedly decided the movie's fate, giving studio execs a reason to believe that "Deadpool" can be a success. Miller, known in the industry as a special effects artist and founder of effects company Blur Studio, will be directing.

Here's the official synopsis via Screen Rant:

"Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life."

The part where "Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life" hints at larger "X-Men" connections, as the plot might explore his origins in the Weapon-X program, the same program that gave Wolverine his powers.

"Deadpool" opens in theaters on Feb. 12, 2016.
