Local riots in Maryland have gained attention all over the world, including South Korea.

Seattle-born Korean rapper Jay Park took to social media to promote litigation in the United States regarding alleged police brutality. The tweet was in response to a previous tweet by Def Jams founder Russell Simmons, in relation to riots in Baltimore in protest of the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody.

Park retweeted Simmons’s message saying that police in the United States need more policing.

“We need legislation so police can no longer police themselves,” wrote Simmons on Twitter and Instagram, along with an image of a statement regarding the treatment of African Americans by police. “We need special impartial independent prosecutors in cases where police are accused of illegal activities.”

On April 27, the governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, requested the aid of National Guard and declared a state of emergency  in Baltimore due to rioting related to protests against alleged police brutality.

The riots in Baltimore are the latest in a series of demonstrations and actions against police officers due to alleged mistreatment towards African American men. The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner led to nationwide protests, including nearly 30,000 protestors demonstrating in New York City.

Park is the co-CEO of AOMG, a Korean hip hop record label, and recently announced the release of his first English single.
