Yang Hyun Suk Skeptical, Yet Optimistic For Upcoming American Debut Of 2NE1's CL

After "Gangnam Style" by Psy went viral, it appeared that a K-pop artist breaking into the U.S. market was possible. After all, it's still the most viewed music videos on YouTube of all time.

The next YG Entertainment artist to take the U.S. by storm is 2NE1's CL. She's already made several appearances with American artists, including being featured on Skrillex's song "Dirty Vibe." Although it's not certain how or when exactly when she will debut, Papa YG Yang Hyun Suk recently revealed that he's skeptical, but has hopes for CL.

In response to the assertion that things were going well for CL so far, Yang Hyun Suk made a positive yet cautionary statement.

"It's not [necessarily] going well, but Psy's American manager, Scooter Braun, is attached to her and is diligently helping out.  It looks like the possibility is big once proper promotions are under way," explained Yang (via Allkpop).

"CL might or might not do well in America, but there is potential, so we're trying to do our best."

It would seem that Yang is mostly concerned that the history of Asian artists trying to break into U.S. is not necessarily a positive one. For example, artists like BoA and Se7en both had arguable success by having English-language singles on the Bilboard charts. However, those successes were extremely small in comparison to the success of American artists who have exported their music to other countries.

Some might say the U.S. music market was impossible to break into by foreign artists. But times have certainly changed. Psy's success as well as other foreign artists from Great Britain like Sam Smith and Adele may point to a better chance for CL.

In fact, even Yang Hyun Suk believes that times are changing, stating that, "a new paradigm is being created in America, if you look at a lot of the singers doing well recently, a lot of them are from overseas."
