'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Spoilers: Executive Producer Julie Plec Says Ian Somerhalder Will Be Getting Back To 'Old Damon'

Every time a major cast member decides to leave a TV series, producers are faced with the question of whether the series can sustain without them.

In the case of "The Vampire Diaries," executive producer Julie Plec believes there's still plenty of Mystic Falls left to explore.

After a successful yet heart-breaking season finale, "The Vampire Diaries" said goodbye to main character Elena (played by actress Nina Dobrev). Luckily for fans who still think there's still plenty to be explained, executive producer Julie Plec confirmed that in season seven, actor Ian Somerhalder will be able to get back to the fun he had in season one.

"Elena's departure actually lets us take Damon down a different road and have more fun with his character and [get back to] that season 1 Damon that everybody loved so much and that Ian [Somerhalder] himself loved so much," explained Plec to Entertainment Weekly.

This statement seems to back up the eerie final minute of "The Vampire Diaries" season six finale which featured one Damon Salvatore looking over a rather destitute looking Mystic Falls. If he'll be getting back to his mischief of season one, it likely means there will be lots of humans with mysterious bites.

But then again, it almost seems as though Damon can't regress too much. There's still the matter of the new Heretic family and the possibility of Bonnie scolding him for creating problems for the humans still living in Mystic Falls. Add in the potential problem of still dealing with his mother, and it's likely that Damon will only be able to regress to a certain extent.

There's still much waiting to be had on the part of fans for "The Vampire Diaries" season seven. However, the wait may be worth it if you were waiting for the return of the edgier Damon.
