"The Magicians" Trailer Released; Plot Details Of New Syfy Series Revealed!

Syfy's newest TV show, "The Magicians" just released its very first trailer. The show is based on the book by the same name of author Lev Grossman, which was released in 2009.

The show follows Quentin, played by Jason Ralph, a young man who discovers that there is a university where you can enroll in to study magic. At Brakebills University, Quentin meets Eliot (Hale Appleman), and Penny (Arjun Gupta) who quickly become his friends.

Syfy's official synopsis for the series reads, "The Magicians stars Jason Ralph (A Most Violent Year, Aquarius) as Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant grad student who enrolls in Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic."

"He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real- and poses grave danger to humanity," the release concludes.

Quentin has two love interests in the story, one from his high school, Julia (Stella Maeve) and one that he meets at Brakebills, Alice (Sosie Bacon).

The series has been described as "'Harry Potter' for adults," and "'Harry Potter' meets 'Less Than Zero.'" Indeed, the characters have been bumped up to grad school, from the high school setting in the book. Also, Brakebills is expected to be only a temporary setting for the show as the characters move on to other places.

"The Magicians" has no confirmed release date yet, but Syfy is slated to air the first season some time in 2016. There are 12 episodes to be expected from this new series.

Author Lev Grossman worked as a writer for Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times before becoming senior writer at TIME magazine. His book, "The Magicians" has two follow-up sequels, 2011's "The Magicians's King," and 2014's "The Magician's Land." He also wrote two books prior to "The Magicians" series, "Warp," and "Codex."
