'Pitch Perfect 2' Reigns Supreme At Box Office; Elizabeth Banks Talks Possibility Of Third Installment

It took a group of girls singing acapella to take down a behemoth in "Mad Max: Fury Road" as "Pitch Perfect 2" ruled the box-office. Director Elizabeth Banks, meanwhile, is already talking about a third installment.

According to Box-Office Mojo, "Pitch Perfect 2" already took home $74,426,390 in domestic ticket sales as of May 18. It earned a total of more than $112 million in global box-office revenues.

"That means, however, that 'Pitch Perfect 2,' which marks Elizabeth Banks' feature film directorial debut, is the the third biggest opening for a female director, not the second. It now falls behind Catherine Hardwick's 'Twilight' ($69.6 million) and Sam Taylor-Johnson's '50 Shades of Grey' ($85.2 million)," said Variety.

By comparison, "Mad Max: Fury Road," starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, took in $50,767,601 in domestic sales. However, it earned more in worldwide ticket sales at $65,000,000 against the $38 million by "Pitch Perfect 2."

The huge box-office numbers will probably mean that there's going to be another sequel to "Pitch Perfect 2."

TIME magazine, meanwhile, said the box-office numbers of "Pitch Perfect 2," which surpasses the original, is not easy to achieve despite the successes of the "Fast and the Furious," "Hunger Games" or "Twilight" franchises.

"Though it's hard to know if a sequel will be a hit, there's one thing that's clear: Sequels are dominating the box office," it said. "Out of the top ten films with the highest opening weekends of all-time, eight of them are sequels, including this year's Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron."

With "Pitch Perfect 2" raking in huge numbers at the box office, Elizabeth Banks said in a report from Celebrity Dirty Laundry that everybody is already talking about a third sequel.

"I will say, it would be disingenuous to say that no one's talking about a Pitch Perfect 3; the possibility of it," she said.

"We are really focused on getting as many butts in seats for this one. If fans embrace it, we are going to seriously think about what the continuing journey would look like, but we don't know what that is yet."
