K-Pop Double Take: San E Turns A Hypnotic Groove Into A Hip-Hop Anthem On 'I Deserve It' Featuring illinit, i11evn, Jessi Of Lucky J [AUDIO]

K-Pop Double Take is a weekly review column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

One bit of conventional hip-hop wisdom is that if the beat is truly great, not only should any artist sound good rapping over it, but it should be able to stand alone as a bangin' instrumental.

It's doubtful that either standard would apply to "I Deserve It" featuring Jessi of hip-hop trio Lucky J, illinit and i11evn, the highly overlooked song off of San E's latest album "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," released on April 23.

Unless you were looking for a soundtrack for a modern samurai film or for a background for your yoga class, an instrumental version of the opening bars of "I Deserve It" would probably not be exactly what you were looking for in an instrumental track, despite a powerful chorus hook steeped in Dr. Dre-style production.

But let San E, Lucky J, illinit and i11evn loose over this beat and "I Deserve It" becomes a tour de force. With each artist bringing their A game, this hip-hop standoff is easily the standout track on "The Boy Who Cried Wolf."

Rap styles as diverse as Eminem, RZA, Mysikal and Lil Wayne all are dropped into the mix on "I Deserve It." The song is such a blistering kaleidoscope of talent that it ends seemingly almost as soon as it began.

Against this dense barrage of serious rhyme flows, this minimalist beat makes perfect sense as the ideal compliment. It might not be the ideal freestyle beat for every up-and-coming MC, but it sure is right for this talented cast of characters.
