PS4 to Retail for $400 Japanese Newspaper Reports: Rumors Swirl about Sony's PlayStation 4 Gaming System [VIDEO]

How does a PS4 for $400 sound?

A report Thursday morning by the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun that a Sony PlayStation 4 will sell for roughly $400, got the tech blogosphere buzzing, as gamers hungry for the new system's release clamored to separate fact from fiction.

"When major Japanese newspapers like Asahi or Nikkei run rumors, they are usually pretty solid," blogger Brian Ashcraft wrote for the tech blog Kotaku "Thing is, there's not much here that hasn't already been leaked before."

Ashcraft pointed out that the newspapers speculation on the pricing of the PS4 could be arrived at through simple deductive reasoning.

"The price point doesn't seem rock solid," Ashcraft wrote. "Remember how much the original PS3 cost? The 20GB version was US$499, while the 60GB version was $599. Now the Asahi News is saying PS4 will cost over $400. That's not only kind of vague, but rather obvious!"

Rumors about the PlayStation 4 hit a frenzied pitch last week when Sony representatives, who have yet to confirm the existence of the PS4, announced an event in New York City on February 12.

"See the future," read a Twitter post the company tweeted from the account @Playstation on January 31. The tweet included a link to a vague ad and the information that on February 20 at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, curious gamers could "be the first to know."

"Omg PS4 possible announcement on the 20th?????" wrote Twitter user David V.

Although Twitter user Bryony is skeptical of all the hype the PlayStation 4 is getting.

"Wow. So many facts being leaked about the PS4!" she tweeted on Thursday. "Sorry. I meant 'so many websites desperate for hits.'"
