'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Movie Sequel Release Date:  The next book in Stieg Larssoen's story of the intrepid journalist and even more intrepid assistant is coming out on Sept. 1. The sequel to the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" sequel will be entitled "The Girl in the Spider's Web. It was written by David Lagercrantz who took on the task after the death of writer Stieg Larsson. 

'The Girl in the Spider's Web'   was announced by Knopf publisher Sonny Mehta. Knopf also released a shot of the book cover.

"David Lagercrantz's familiarity and understanding of Stieg's work as a journalist, coupled with his appreciation Stieg's work as a novelist, made him the perfect candidate to continue working on the Millennium series, and it is evident on every page of this extraordinary thriller," Mehta said in a statemetn. "The Girl in the Spider's Web is as good as its predecessors and uniquely of the moment. I know readers are going to be thrilled when they are reacquainted with both Lisbeth and Mikael in one of the most compelling Millennium novels to date."

Knopf hasn't given out any plot details on "The Girl in the Spider's Web," but writer David Lagercrantz promises some "surprises."

Stieg Larsson died of a heart attack in 2004  before the "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy was published. Larsson wrote three books out of a planned 10-book series: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.

Like Larsson, Lagercrantz he was a crime reporter in Sweden before becoming a novelist. Lagercrantz published several novels and co-wrote the memoir of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a Swedish soccer star.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was made into an English-language film starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara and directed by David Fincher. Rooney Mara said it is unlikely that a sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which co-starred Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, will come to the screen. The next book in the series was to "The Girl Who Played With Fire."

There were rumors that "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest" are scheduled to hit the big screens in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

The longer it is between films, the worse the chances are of David Fincher bringing "The Girl Who Played With Fire" to the screen. The chances of Mara reprising her role as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" are getting slimmer even if Fincher isn't back to helm the sequel.

"I don't think it's going to happen," Mara Rooney told the press at an Oxfam benefit in New York. "I'm sad never to do it again, but it just doesn't seem like it's in the cards. I think because [Sony] already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script ... it will result in something". And of that script, she said that "I can reveal as much as it is extremely different from the book".

Steven Zaillian and Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the script for "The Girl Who Played With Fire." Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Fincher are all interested in making a "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" movie sequel, but the longer the wait, the less likely it is to happen. "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" grossed a disappointing $233 million worldwide on a $90 million budget.

The Swedish versions of "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and 'The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest," came out in 2009. There have been no official confirmations on the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequels.

"The script that we now have has huge potential, I can reveal as much as it is extremely different from the book," David Fincher told the Brazilian site overtice.com.br. a few months ago.

"I think because (Sony) already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script, it will result in something," Film Divider reported that Fincher told the Swedish site Afton Bladet.
