MERS Scare In South Korea Causes Concert Cancellations

A concert series held by two Korean top hip-hop stars was cancelled due to the fear of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) spreading in South Korea.

Popular and up and coming hip-hop artists like Mad Clown, Junggigo, and Loco were set to perform at the Black Music Stage, which was set to be held this weekend. However, the June 5 and 6 shows were cancelled because of health risks relating to a MERS outbreak in South Korea.

MERS has led to multiple deaths in South Korea, and has caused panic. The Black Music Stage is one of many events that in Seoul that have been postponed or cancelled due to Mers.

Along with Junggigo, Mad Clown, and Loco, Gray, DonMills, and ELO were also set to perform at the Black Music Stage shows.

The breakout of MERS in South Korea caused widespread panic after it was revealed that  people who had come in contact with the disease were breaking quarantine. One man flew to China despite being quarantined.

MERS spreads primarily in hospitals, and one doctor who was infected with MERS came in contact with over 1,000 people before being diagnosed with the illness, leading to panic. Events in South Korea, and tour groups heading to South Korea, have changed or cancelled plans because of the concerns.

As of June 4, the death toll in South Korea rose to three and 36 people in South Korea had the disease. At least 1,600 people were in quarantine, either at-home or in state run facilities, reports the Korea Times.
