Iggy Azalea Tells Twitter Followers She Is Pulling Out of Pittsburgh LGBT Parade Over Past Homophobic And Racist Tweets

Iggy Azalea announced on Twitter that is is dropping out of her headlining LGBT event in Pittsburgh after being blasted for homophobic and racist tweets.

Azalea cancelled her performance at the Pittsburgh Pridefest five days ahead of the event.

"I am truly disappointed that I have to share this news, but I will no longer be performing at Pittsburgh Pride on June 13th," Azalea tweeted.

"This has been a difficult decision as I truly support the event and LGBTQIA communities, however I feel my participation at this point would only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event."

"I am a firm believer in equality. Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so carelessly said to be interpreted as reflective of my character," Azalea tweeted.

The Australian rapper said she supports the LGBT community, but thinks an appearance would "only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event."

After Azalea was announced as the headliner for the Pittsburg event, members of the LGBT community announced they would boycott the event.

"Our board voted last week to not march in the Pittsburgh Pride parade, due to the insensitive choice of Iggy Azalea as headliner," said Vanessa Davis, of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The city's first openly gay elected official, Pittsburgh City Council president Bruce Kraus, also criticized the Australian rapper.

"This has been a difficult decision as I truly support the event and LGBTQIA communities, however I feel my participation at this point would only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event."

"[Homophobia] comes from ignorance and homophobes not being around enough gay people," Azalea told The Advocate in an April 2014 interview. "People just need to be exposed to it long enough for it to not be scary anymore. That's the case with a lot of rappers. They haven't been around very many different people, and a lot of them aren't very well traveled. It's just a lack of culture."

Azalea also recently canceled her Great Escape Tour, saying that she needed a "mental break".
