NY1 Speaks To Epik High And Highlights Group's Impact On Korean Music

New York is taking notice of the recent Korean hip-hop invasion.

NY1, the local Time Warner Cable news channel in New York, covered the upcoming concert of Epik High in New York City on June 10. NY1's Lewis Dodley spoke to Epik High after the group arrived in New York City, and discussed their impact on the Korean hip hop scene.

"We deliberately made sure that we had four days of rest before because these will be huge shows," frontman Tablo told NY1. "The first show sold out so we added an encore show on the 13. So we're very, very excited. [We] Can't wait to meet the fans."

Dodley introduced the Korean Wave, known as Hallyu, and described Epik High's success as a "tsunami," highlighting the fact that Epik High is the first group to hold a large tour throughout North America since the Wonder Girls toured with the Jonas Brothers in 2009.

The NY1 piece introduced Epik High's career, and described Tablo as "the resilient leader" who helped the group achive its dreams despite the lack of interest in hip hop in Korea when Epik High was formed in 2003.

Since then, the trio has become a forerunner of hip hop in South Korea, and is one of multiple Korean hip hop acts to come to the United States in 2015.

The report focused on the outpouring of support from New York fans, and showed a clip from a flash mob organized to welcome Epik High to New York City. The trio surprised fans and joined them at the event.

"I think it's only logical that it [Korean hip hop] is blowing up into the states because K-pop has been doing so well," Tablo said.

Epik High is holding two shows in New York City this week on June 13 and June 14 at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square.
