Girl Catches Fire at Hospital in Oregon, Suffers Third-Degree Burns

An 11-year-old cancer survivor, Ireland Lane who was hospitalized for a head injury, is now receiving treatment for third-degree burns at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

She was reportedly painting in her room at the hospital when her shirt somehow caught fire. As a result she suffered third-degree burns to her chest, neck, arms and earlobes on February 2.

"She still has bad dreams, but she doesn't recall the actual incident, which from my perspective is very good," her father Steven Lane told The Oregonian.

"I've been in medicine going back 30 years now and never heard anything like this. And hopefully I never will again,"Dr. Stacy Nicholson, physician-in-chief at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, told KATU.

"Our safety experts are working closely with the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office on its investigation," Nicholson added in a statement to ABCNews.com. "We anxiously await the their findings and will certainly make adjustments if the cause was preventable."

The fire was extinguished by hospital staff and yet the exact cause remains unknown however investigators believe alcohol hand sanitizer and static electricity may have been the cause.

The girl originally scheduled to be released from the hospital on the day of the fire will now need to receive multiple skin grafts and burn treatments. She is scheduled for her second skin graft on Thursday which coincides with her birthday.

"She's quite a tough one," her father said. "She's been through more than any child I've ever heard of, and to still walk around with a smile on her face and enjoy the things of the day that are going on, and be a kid is to me pretty amazing."
