Kurt Cobain would have 46 years old today. The front man of legendary rock band Nirvana and the undisputed voice of the 1990s generation would be celebrating his birthday Wednesday.

Many Nirvana fans took to Twitter to celebrate the 1990s icon's 46^th birthday by posting their favorite Kurt Cobain quotes.

"'I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not' Kurt Cobain," tweeted ChloeMcFlyTW

"Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.'"-Kurt Cobain," tweeted Jack Dorsey.

"'If you're a sexist, racist, homophobe, or basically an arsehole, don't buy this CD. I don't care if you like me, I hate you.' - Kurt Cobain," tweeted Cathal.

"I'm so happy because today I found my friends - they're in my head." - Kurt Cobain Happy Birthday - wish you were still with us!" wrote Twitter user Mel, quoting the Nirvana classic, "Lithium."

Cobain died in 1994 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, not before changing popular music forever.

Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic released their first album "Bleech" on the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. But it was when drummer Dave Grohl joined the band on 1991's "Nevermind," released on DGC in 1991, that things took off for the trio.

"Nevermind" created a sensation unparalleled in popular music since the days of Beatlemania, obliterating all hair metal in its path.

The album catapulted Nirvana to instant international fame.

Cobain's band helped bring the world of alternative rock to the mainstream, along with bands like The Breeders and Sonic Youth. However fame was known to have had a major price for Cobain, who felt he had betrayed his punk rock ethos by finding instant success on a major record label.

"Hello, we're corporate rock sell outs," Cobain once said to a crowd to introduce a Nirvana set.

Frances Bean, Cobain's daughter with Hole singer and actress Courtney Love, was 2 when the rock legend died. She is now 18-years-old.
