PlayStation 4 Unveiled In New York City: Sony Says PS4 Will Be Out By Christmas, Unveils New Controller, Four New Titles [PHOTOS]

The PlayStation4 was unveiled at an event in New York City on Wednesday.

Sony executives unveiled some important details about the PlayStation 4 at the event, including what new games the console will feature and what the new controller will look like.

Sony promised the PS4---the company's first major game console since introducing the PlayStation 3 in 2006---would be available in time for the 2013 holiday season.

"PlayStation 4 will "be part of a new ecosystem focused on hardware, software and the fastest, most powerful gaming network," Sony representatives said at the event, according to the Associated Press.

The new network is one of the major selling points of the PlayStation 4, according to lead architect for the PS4, Mark Cerny.

"Our long-term vision is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero," Cerny said.

Sony also unveiled four of the videogame titles the PlayStation 4 will feature.

The titles include "Knack," a game where PS4 players operate a robot defending the world against an alien attack, "Killzone: Shadow Fall," a Cold War-era military saga, "Driveclub," an ultrarealistic driving game, and "infamous: Second Son" a game that seems to combine television shows "Heroes" and "The Wire."

According to Nate Fox of "infamous: Second Son" gamemaker Sucker Punch, the game features humans under constant surveillance who acquire superpowers and become "living, breathing weapons...who can pass through a strip search completely undetectable."

This year promises to be big for gamers, The PlayStation 4 will be released just months after Xbox unveils its next big gaming console in June at the E3 video game expo in Los Angeles.

Sony also unveiled the new controller for the PlayStation 4 at Wednesday's event. The PS4 controller looks the same as the PlayStation 3 controller, with the addition of a share button and touchpad.

The power of the new PlayStation 4 gaming network was revealed in Sony Games Director Matt Southern's comments about the way it will revolutionize online gameplay in "Driveclub."

"You're not just driving against your friends or the stats of a real-world racer," Southern said. "You're driving against clubs all around the world."

Southern says PS4 players are not racing, but completing "challenges" in the strikingly realistic driving game.
