Skier Killed By Avalanche In British Columbia That Traps Three: Tragedy Occurs One Day After Skier, 13, Falls To Death In Italy [PHOTO]

A skier was killed in an avalanche that trapped two other skiers on Friday at the Revelstoke Mountain Resort in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Police did not immediately release the name of the victim.

Rob Elliot, general manager at Revelstoke, told the Canadian Press on Friday that the three were part of a group of five or six men that had been skiing in a restricted area some distance from the ski resort.

"A number of the group were able to get out to summon further help and are speaking with RCMP investigators and search and rescue," Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Dan Moskaluk said.

He added that while the group was able to successfully rescue two of their friends, but the third skier was killed in the avalanche.

"I don't know what equipment they were equipped with, but they did self-rescue," Moskaluk said.

The body will be recovered on Saturday. No additional information has been released about who the group of skiers was, or where they were from.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has issued a high danger rating for parts of British Columbia through the weekend and beyond. The threat is expected to rise when a new winter storm rolls in on Sunday.

The skier killed in Friday's avalanche wasn't the only tragedy to occur on the slopes that day.

British student Poonam Bhattal, 13, died from cardiac arrest after she allegedly fell out of a chairlift Friday morning, at the northern Italy ski resort Claviere.

The skier was on a trip with her classmates from the Guru Nanak Sikh Academy in West London when the fall from her chairlift allegedly killed the girl, according to British newspaper the Telegraph.

"At approximately 10am this morning we were informed from the leader of the trip that following a tragic accident, one of our students had died on the annual ski trip in Italy," read a statement released Friday by the school. "The principal and the other vice principal went to the parental home just after 11am. It transpired that the parents were away from home for a few days. The principal contacted the family by telephone to ensure that they heard the tragic news from him personally...The leader of this trip and everyone associated with it is devastated by the death of an absolutely lovely student."
